The courtyard area of Hackler Intermediate School is a very fun and active place!
We have two outdoor classrooms called Coleman East and Coleman West where teachers take students to get out of the regular classroom and get some fresh air. Other things in the courtyard include our butterfly garden and beautiful flower garden with plants and flowers native to Arkansas. Our students grow their own vegetables in the above ground gardens and even compost food from the cafeteria in their own compost barrel and collect their own water in a rain barrel.
In the spring, the courtyard sidewalks are lined with blooming tulips that students planted a few years ago. And, of course, you can usually find Duke our tortoise roaming around eating grass or safely tucked away in his outdoor habitat.
We also have two benches dedicated in memory of Hayden Padgett who attended our school and lost his battle with cancer while he was a Hackler student. They are a wonderful addition and help us to remember our good buddy Hayden. Most days you can find Hackler students doing something productive and having a good time making our courtyard beautiful. It is a fun, educational and beautiful place to be.
